Did you know that winter is a wonderful time to plant leafy greens in your garden?

Bok choy is my favorite!
Bok choy is my favorite!

Since my family only planted a spring and summer vegetable garden I never really considered growing
one at any other time of year…until several years ago.   Now winter is my  favorite time to plant leafy
greens because plants are less stressed in our mild San Diego winter temperatures and when our winter
rains come the plants really thrive.  We get to watch them grow and harvest them at their peak for our
tasty salads and stir-fries.

Some of my favorite leafy greens to grow during the winter season are snow peas, bok choy, broccoli,
lettuce, kale, swiss chard, arugula, mustard greens, cilantro, and onions.

Now you won’t see vegetables this fresh at the supermarket.  So, what are you waiting for?  It’s not too
late to plant some of these wonderful greens in your garden this season.  Happy growing!
